Responding to a Seizure: First Aid and Treatments

Dietary Treatments

The ketogenic diet is monitored by a registered dietitian and the patient's doctor. The ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carbohydrates and adequate protein diet. It has been successful in stopping seizures in some children with epilepsy and reducing seizure frequency in other children.

The modified Atkins diet can also be utilized to help control seizures in children. This diet is not for weight loss but rather carbohydrates are restricted and monitored by a registered dietitian to determine whether limiting carbohydrates have an antiepileptic effect.
