Our hospital is an American Heart Association Community Training Center and offers the following classes:
Family & Friends (F & F) CPR – This program contains information on how to perform basic skills of CPR for adults, children and infants and how to help an adult, child or infant who is choking.
- This class is for: Family members, friends, middle and high school aged students, and members of the community
- Participants will not receive a course completion card

HeartSaver (HS) AED – The HS AED course teaches the basic techniques of infant, child and adult CPR, including use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Students also learn to use barrier devices in CPR and give first aid for choking. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of 3 major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, and choking.
- This class is for: Any community or corporate member that needs or wants to learn CPR and AED use; individuals providing licensed child care; foster parents in Illinois.
- Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a HS AED card that is good for 2 years.
CPR for Healthcare Providers (HCP CPR) – the HCP CPR is a course that teaches skills in mouth to mouth, mouth to mask and bag and mask ventilation as well as one and two person CPR and AED use. In addition to the psychomotor skills demonstration, participants are required to take a written test.
- This class is for: Health care professionals
- Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a HCP CPR card that is good for 2 years.
The hospital, through the department of Clinical and Organizational Development, also offers other resuscitation oriented courses.
The following are Emergency Nursing Association (ENA)-sponsored courses:
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) – This course teaches registered nurse participants to recognize the ill or injured child and identify significant, yet subtle changes in the less acute child. Additionally, the course covers all aspects of pediatric emergency nursing, including, but not limited to pediatric trauma and pediatric resuscitation. The ultimate goal of the course is to improve the care of the pediatric patient by increasing the knowledge, skill, and confidence of emergency nurses.
- This class is for: Registered nurses.
Find more details about the 2011 ENPC course in the brochure/registration form here.
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – This course follows the trauma nursing process and incorporates the latest evidence-based medical knowledge and technological advances into an interactive course. Although the course is adult focused, information on the pediatric patient, and trauma in pregnancy is included. The course covers many aspects of trauma nursing assessment and care.
- This class is for: registered nurses with at least 6 months of Emergency Department experience.
Find more details about the 2011 TNCC course in the brochure/registration form here.
In conjunction with Northwestern University’s Perinatal Center, we also offer Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) courses and STABLE courses.
- Register for the NRP course here.
- The Neonatal Resuscitation Program materials are based on the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Cardiovascular Care of the Neonate. The focus of the course is on neonatal resuscitation performed by a coordinated team.
- This class is for: Any member of the neonatal resuscitation team.
S.T.A.B.L.E. – The STABLE Program is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessments and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.
- This class is for: Any health care professional who routinely provides care to the neonatal patient.
