Unique Spaces
Hospitalized children and their families need a healing environment that promotes discovery and development through support, play and education. Our unique spaces offer programs and resources to help children and their families adjust to being in the hospital.
Janice and Kimberly Brown Family Life Center
Located on the main hospital's fifth floor, the Janice and Kimberly Brown Family Life Center is a respite area devoted to inpatients and their families. The colorful and curving walls, aquarium and central skylight were designed to be a family-friendly distraction from hospital life.
Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but closed from noon to 1 p.m.
Please refer to the weekly activity schedule posted near the visitor elevators on each floor or call the center at 773.880.4000 extension 58951 for daily programming and special events.
The center is home to the following unique spaces and activities:
The Liz and Jules Stiffel Play Atrium: This cheerful play space is used for developmental play groups. During group, patients and siblings are supervised by child life staff and volunteers. Activities supporting the development of children ages 4-11, such as arts and crafts, board games, medical play, and computers are featured and although parents and guardians are welcomed, children can attend on their own. Adults must remain with children under four years of age. Family free time is set aside for patients and their families to relax, read or play together. Families can enjoy the games and educational materials available. This allows parents and children to spend time together outside of the care setting. Children must be supervised by an adult during family free time.
Morton Teen Lounge: This is a unique space for inpatient teens and their families. Inpatient teens are encouraged to use the lounge as a place to socialize with peers. During groups, teens have the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts projects as well as play video, arcade and board games. There is a juke box, and teens can borrow movies, music and books from the lounge's library during their stay.
The Business Center: This dedicated workspace contains a fax and copy machine, telephones, computer and modem hook-up and wireless internet connection for adults working away from their office or home.
Family Living Room and Quiet Room: Parents can relax in a comfortable environment, which includes television, magazines and reading materials. Medical reference materials, child development information, and community resource information is also available. Special services, such as massages and haircuts, are available here.
Toy, Book and Video Lending: Patients can borrow toys, books, board games and video tapes for use in their rooms. Items may be checked out and returned during Brown Family Life Center hours.
Chapel
Located on the lower level of the hospital, the Chapel is open to parents, patients and visitors of all faith traditions at all times. Services are held at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Read more about spiritual and pastoral care at the hospital.
Garden Courtyard
The Garden Court, supported and maintained by the Founders' Board of Children's Memorial, provides a quiet and natural environment in which parents, siblings, and ambulatory patients can relax. The Garden Court is accessible via the arcade level (basement) of the hospital.
Parent Lounges
A lounge is located on each floor for parents and visitors to relax. A television, couches, tables, a restroom, telephones and reading materials are located there for your use. Please note that smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the hospital and only in designated areas outside on the hospital campus.
Infant Playroom
Located on the 6th Floor, the Infant Playroom is an area designed for the unique needs and interests of infants and toddlers. Play groups are held regularly and daily schedules are posted.
