Community-engaged research in child advocacy

The Office of Child Advocacy has provided seed funding for three community-engaged research projects in child advocacy. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support researchers and advocates from Children’s Memorial Hospital to collaborate with a community-based organization (CBO) or another community partner to pursue a research project of mutual interest. Research projects in child advocacy are designed to enhancing health or social outcomes for children in the community settings. This advocacy initiative will allow researchers to gather baseline experience and data that will enable them to pursue future grant applications for more in-depth study; and to contribute to the scientific literature on effective advocacy interventions.

The one-year projects include:

  • Implementing a Gatekeeper Training Program for Depression and Suicide Among Latino Youth (Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
  • Concussion Education for Contact Sport Athletes, Parent and Coaches through Chicago Park District (Division of Orthopedic Surgery)
  • Evaluation of West Humbolt Park Safe Schools Network (Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Communities)
