Children's Memorial Hospital: Serving our communities
Children are our most precious resource. Children embody the future, and by investing in their health and well-being, we impact the quality of their future in the most positive and direct way. For more than 125 years, Children’s Memorial Hospital has been privileged to serve its community by providing state of the art and accessible medical care to all children. These children come from throughout Illinois, the region and the nation to seek cures and treatment for pediatric diseases and injuries. These endeavors involve the integrated expertise of more than 70 pediatric subspecialties.
In fiscal year 2008, Children’s Memorial and affiliated organizations provided nearly $110.6 million in direct community benefits, including:
- Charity care, losses due to reimbursement below cost of Medicaid services, and other uncompensated costs ($80,681,531)
- Resident and fellow training ($14,050,791)
- Language assistance services, pastoral care, social work, art and music therapies, hospital volunteer services, transplant patient family housing and other family support services ($6,750,860)
- Research funding ($5,680,204)
- Community clinic support ($2,827,204)
- Child advocacy programs ($593,111)
Children’s Memorial is the State of Illinois’ primary partner in providing health care to Medicaid-eligible children. During fiscal year 2008, Children’s Memorial was reimbursed $54.3 million less than the cost of providing services to children covered by the Medicaid program. During that same year, Children’s Memorial experienced an unprecedented 11 percent growth in its outpatient Medicaid utilization. In fiscal year 2008, our doctors were reimbursed $27.6 million less than it cost them to care for children insured by Medicaid.
We are grateful to all those who collaborate with us to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential. They include our precious patients and their families, elected and appointed officials, community leaders, donors, volunteers, doctors, nurses and other caregivers. We are eager to continue working together to alleviate suffering and give hope to children and families now and for generations to come
Sincerely,
