Expert on child abuse receives national award
July 9, 2010 - The medical director of Children’s Memorial Hospitals’ Protective Services Team, Emalee Flaherty, MD, was recognized by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) for her work in child abuse prevention. Flaherty received the Outstanding Professional Award as someone who has made outstanding contributions in the field of child maltreatment and the advancement of APSAC’s goals.
The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children is the leading national organization supportingprofessionals who serve children and families affected by child maltreatment and violence. As a multidisciplinary group of professionals, APSAC achieves its mission in a number of ways, most notably through expert training and educational activities, policy leadership and collaboration, and consultation that emphasizes theoretically sound, evidence-basedprinciples. APSAC envisions a world where all maltreated or at-risk children and their families have access to the highestlevel of professional commitment and service.
Flaherty heads a team of pediatricians, social workers, and other medial specialists who take care of children who are at risk or victims of abuse or neglect. She is a nation-wide expert on child abuse, and is often called as an expert witness in child abuse cases. She has written numerous papers on child abuse and most recently headed a four year study that examined the factors that influence physicians to identify and report injuries by child abuse.
In addition to being on staff at Children's Memorial, Flaherty is associate professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Children's Memorial Hospital is one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. Its physicians are on staff at Feinberg School of Medicine.
