Food allergy is severe and affects record number of children in the U.S. The study published in the July issue of Pediatrics and headed by Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, Attending Physician, General Academic Pediatrics at Children’s Memorial and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, shows food allergy affects 8 percent of children under the age of 18 or about 5.9 million children in the U.S. Based on this data, 1 in 13 children have some form of food allergy, and more distressing is that 2 out of 5 affected have a severe form. The Food Allergy Initiative funded this important study and along with primary researches, Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, will aim to understand what the observed geographical, racial and diagnostic trends imply and why some children are spared of this allergy. New virus linked to Kawasaki disease Anne Rowley, MD, Attending Physician, Infectious Diseases at Children’s Memorial, and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, along with her research team have made an important discovery regarding Kawasaki disease. Dr. Rowley’s findings point to a single respiratory virus or a closely related group of viruses as the cause. Rowley's findings were published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases and were favorably received by other researchers in this area around the world. She has been invited to give presentations at conferences in Japan this fall. Computer-aided medication management helps treat ADHD Medication is effective in reducing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms, but community management is sub optimal. Computer-assisted decision-making can improve quality of care. John Lavigne, PhD, Chief Psychologist at Children’s Memorial, and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has helped develop Focus on ADHD, a software program which can help physicians decide if a child’s dose is working at an optimal level.
