Costello joins to lead, expand Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care

John M. Costello, MD, MPH, joined Children's Memorial in July 2010 to head the hospital's Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). He will lead expansion of the current CICU into the 36-bed Regenstein Cardiac Care Unit, which will occupy an entire floor in Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. At the core of the CICU is a dedicated group of pediatric cardiac intensivists, all of whom are equipped to treat a broad range of complex heart conditions from infancy through young adulthood. Chicago's first neuromuscular program

Children's Memorial Hospital's pediatric neuromuscular program offers an advanced level of care for children suffering from muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and other neuromuscular disorders. Children's Memorial was recently designated as a clinical trial research site of the Cooperative International Research Group, a multi-center research consortium with 21 sites in 10 countries. This will offer patients access to the most innovative therapies being tested nationally. Nancy Kuntz, MD, a nationally known expert in this area, was recruited to head the program. Read more »


Comprehensive sleep center dedicated solely to children expands to western suburbs of Chicago

The Sleep Medicine Center at Children's Memorial Hospital has expanded to offer comprehensive sleep medicine services and overnight sleep studies at the outpatient center in Westchester, Illinois in response to a growing recognition of sleep disorders in children. Children's Memorial offers a Pediatric Sleep Medicine Center accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The program is the only comprehensive sleep center in Illinois dedicated solely to children. Stephen H. Sheldon, DO directs the Sleep Medicine Center and is now joined by Darius Loghmanee, MD. NIH expands food allergy research program

National Institutes of Health announced that the Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR), established in 2005, will be funded for five more years. CoFAR will continue to foster new approaches to prevent and treat food allergies and also expand in scope to include research on the genetic causes underlying food allergy and studies of food allergy-associated eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs). Two principal investigators will receive funding under the new CoFAR grant, including Xiaobin Wang, MD, MPH, ScD, who is the Mary Ann & J. Milburn Smith Research Professor and Director of Smith Child Health Research Program at Children's Memorial Research Center. Read more »
