First pediatric hospital in Illinois to acquire device to "zap" once unreachable tumors of the brain and spine

Children's Memorial is the first children’s hospital in Illinois and among the first in the country to acquire a new minimally invasive neurosurgical medical device that makes pediatric brain and spine tumor removal faster and easier. The NICO Myriad has been used in removing brain tumors in children as young as 8 months and can be successful in removing many of the most common malignant and non-cancerous pediatric brain and central nervous system tumors. Extracorporeal photopheresis to treat graft-versus-host disease in lower weight children

With a modified procedure developed by the Hematology/ Oncology/Stem Cell Transplantation team at Children’s Memorial, children weighing as little as 15 kg can be safely treated for graft vs. host disease with ECP performed in a closed, sterile system. This effective treatment gives patients an alternative to immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids, avoiding the associated toxicity and high infection risk. Children’s Memorial is the only hospital in the US to perform closed system ECP in low-weight children. Read more »


New device to help in study of babies born to obese and non-obese mothers

Pea Pod, a fast and non-invasive mechanism used to measure the body fat in newborns is currently being used in a research study conducted by Children's Memorial and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. This clinical study, led by Jami Josefson, MD is trying to determine if increased proportion of body fat at birth is one parameter that may convey increased risk for childhood-onset obesity. Unsafe sleep practice attributed to sudden infant death syndrome

A study conducted at Children's Memorial Research Center reveals that African American infants are far more likely to die from sleep-related causes than any other ethnic group in Illinois. Almost 57 percent of these deaths occurred while the infant was sharing a bed with an adult. Thirty percent of the deaths occurred when the baby was sleeping alone but on a couch or a pillow on the floor, instead of a crib or bassinet. Read more »
