Serving children insured by Medicaid

Learn how we invest in the community through patient care, research, education and advocacy. Watch video »

We are the State of Illinois’ principal partner in providing  exceptional pediatric specialty care to Illinois’ most fragile children. These sick and injured children and their families rely upon the Medicaid program because they lack the financial resources to pay for medical treatment. Many of them have complex medical problems that have caused them to exhaust their commercial insurance, so Medicaid is their safety net.

2010 by the numbers

In 2010, Medicaid representing more than 54 percent of our inpatient days. In addition:

  • During the state's 2010 fiscal year, we provided about 75 percent more outpatient, inpatient and physician Medicaid services when compared to the next highest Illinois hospital.
  • During the hospital's 2010 fiscal year, we were reimbursed $39 million less than the cost of providing those services to children covered by the Medicaid program.
  • And our doctors were reimbursed $32 million less than it cost them to care for children insured by Medicaid.

What we do nationally

Given federal and state proposals to either cut Medicaid funding or implement HMO-style Medicaid managed care plans, we remain gravely concerned about the negative impact on children and their access to necessary health care. Learn more about our involvement with Speak Now for Kids.

What we do locally

We are proud of our leadership in establishing the We Care for Illinois Kids Coalition, made up of child advocates statewide who are committed to improving Medicaid reimbursement for pediatric specialists who protect the well being of the most fragile children in Illinois.
