Milestones

2011

March: Phase II Detailed Operations Planning completed.

February 11: The Data Center at Lurie Children's offically opens.

February: Construction of the hospital's exterior is fully complete. Watch the time lapse video here

January 11: Employee training, Moment One Readiness Orientation kicks off. 

January: Local artist David Csicsko is selected to design the window in the 12th floor chapel. 

2010

 December 14: A mother and baby calf whale sculpture, donated by the Shedd Aquarium, are raised into the Pritzker Foundation Lobby. Watch the video here.

 September 29: Superstation WGN launches documentary series on Lurie Children's

 July: Both tower cranes are removed from site.

June: Construction begins on second floor bridge connecting Lurie Children's to parking garage and Prentice Women's Hospital.

May: Furniture Fair held for employees, patients and parents to provide feedback on potential furniture selections. 

May: Phase II Detailed Operations Planning begins. 

April: All pre-cast (excluding hoist areas) is complete. The cantilever is nearly complete, with the window installation in process. 

April: Painting begins on the lower floors, with the final coat to be applied at the completion of the project.

April: Preparation work begins on the fifth floor bridge from Prentice Women's Hospital.

March: Hospital exceeds $100 million goal to engage minority and women owned enterprises in construction contracts.

February: Move Steering Committee is formed to oversee patient and staff move in June of 2012.

February: Phase I Operations Planning completed.

2009

December 7: Building reaches its highest point and “Topping Off” celebration is held. Watch the slide show or video

October 16: Custom-designed fire truck cab donated by Pierce Manufacturing lifted into 12th floor of building. Watch the picture slide show or video

September: First window installed

August: First pre-cast panel installed.

July 15: Building reaches halfway point (200 feet).  Halfway Up Celebration held with employees.

June: Transition planning begins

March: First shipment of steel arrives and is installed.

February: Internationally renowned Mikyoung Kim selected to design 5,000 square-foot sky garden.

2008

November 2: Excavation complete.  Building Up From Here event held with employees to celebrate.

September: Heroes for Life: Campaign for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago kicks-off at Northerly Island. Watch the video or visit heroesforlife.org

 

 May 1: Interfaith service of blessing for construction site.

 March 10: Community Creative Partnership Design Charrette held to engage the creative and artistic talents of Chicago’s outstanding museums and cultural organizations to assist in the design of Lurie Children’s public spaces

February 26: Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board approves Certificate of Need for hospital construction.

 

February: Chicago City Council approval received.

2007

 September: Ann Lurie announces $100 million gift.                                                                         

2006

December: Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board approves Master Design Certificate of Need.
 April: New hospital site selected after extensive study. Learn about the benefits of our location.

2005

 Initial program development continues.                                                                                  

2004

Initial program development begins. 

February: Board of Directors passes resolution to develop a plan for a new hospital facility.
