Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Young Athletes by Rebecca L. Carl, MD  Published Spring/Summer 2009

Over the last 2 decades, the medical community has become increasingly aware that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries affect not just adults, but children and adolescents as well. Many sports physicians who take care of children are seeing a rise in the number of young patients, especially female athletes, who present with ACL tears. This article will review the diagnostic assessment and management approaches to ACL injuries, as well as discuss the growing focus on effective prevention of these injuries in young athletes.

Overuse Injuries Unique to Young Athlete by Cynthia LaBella, MD   Published Spring 2005

More children are participating in organized sports now than ever before, and competition has become more intense at younger ages. As a result, increasing numbers of young athletes are presenting to pediatricians with sports-related injuries, of which 30% to 50% are due to overuse. Because cartilaginous growth centers are more vulnerable to injury than bones, ligaments and muscle-tendon units, the skeletally immature athlete is at risk for a unique set of overuse injuries. An understanding of how injury mechanisms and risk factors lead to injury will enable the pediatrician to recognize and treat the overuse injuries unique to young athletes, ensure safe and efficient return to sport, and educate athletes, parents, and coaches about effective strategies for injury prevention.
