Research

Each year, approximately eight out of every 1,000 babies born will have a heart defect. Over the past 50 years, tremendous technological advances made possible through research have allowed diagnostic and surgical expertise to flourish with better outcomes and longer life expectancy for these patients.

Children's Memorial has long been a pioneer in the treatment of congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy in children. Research into causes and outcomes of pediatric heart disease has been a critical component since the early 1960s. Transplantation-related research has been directed toward the understanding of mechanisms in chronic rejection, establishment of tolerance and xenotransplantation.

Committed to advancing the field and improving patient care, our Heart Center physicians most recently have studied various topics related to pediatric heart transplant, including immunosuppression using Sirolimus, development of coronary artery fistulas post-transplant, presence of donor-specific antibodies, initiation of ECMO in infants post-transplant, and exercise testing in heart transplant recipients. Specialists also are active participants in the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study »
