Recognize abuse and neglect

Suspect neglect if a child is constantly dirty and has severe body odor. Neglect should also be suspected if a child lacks the right clothing for the weather, or wears clothing so tight that the child's circulation is impaired.

Unfortunately child abuse and neglect happens.  For children who have already fallen victim to child maltreatment, the most important thing is for someone to identify and stop the abuse.  You can help child victims of maltreatment by:

• Recognizing child physical abuse
• Recognizing child sexual abuse
• Recognizing child neglect
• Knowing what to do if you suspect child maltreatment
