Clinical services
The Protective Services Team performs a wide range of clinical services to patients and families where child maltreatment is either suspected or has been identified. A Protective Service Team physician and social workers are on call 24/7 to ensure that no matter when a child enters the hospital our team can be available.
Clinical services include:
Evaluation and management of suspected cases of child maltreatment including:
- Providing immediate psychosocial and medical assessments of children and families; inpatient and Emergency Department evaluations
- Pooling the knowledge and coordinating efforts of the various disciplines and professionals within the hospital and those of outside agencies, public and voluntary, serving an individual and the family
- Making recommendations to cooperating agencies for treatment plans and long term care
SafeKids Clinic: Outpatient evaluation for suspected cases of maltreatment

Physical abuse evaluations: Individual children or high risk sibling groups

Sexual abuse evaluations: Examination, photodocumentation (when appropriate), and forensic laboratory tests

Follow-up examinations for children assessed for maltreatment during hospitalization
Referrals for trauma-focused therapy for victims of violence including abuse
Expert testimony in juvenile and criminal court
