Pulmonary physiology laboratory

The pulmonary physiology laboratory at Children’s Memorial Hospital offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art testing designed to assist in managing the most challenging diagnostic cases.

Our laboratory is pediatric friendly and offers all standard pulmonary lung function testing such as the following:

  • Spirometry
  • Pre/post bronchodilator challenges
  • Lung volumes
  • Lung diffusion studies
  • Respiratory muscle strengths
  • Methacholine provocation studies
  • Pulse oximetry

Our wide range of services provides testing for all age groups, starting with infant pulmonary function testing from birth to approximately 3 years as well as impulse oscillometry for those children unable to perform routine testing.

We also offer a complete bronchoscopy service.

The Exercise Laboratory

The Exercise Laboratory in the Pulmonary Physiology department offers a variety of testing including, but not limited to the following:

  • Pulmonary exercise tolerance tests (such as bicycle ergometer and treadmill studies)
  • Exercise-induced asthma testing
  • Six-minute walk tests

The exercise lab provides complete inpatient pulmonary rehabilitation and home exercise prescription for all referred patients. The lab is staffed by a clinical exercise physiologist with expertise in exercise prescription, testing, assessments and program design.

All testing is performed under the medical supervision of our board-certified pulmonologists who provide interpretation of the pulmonary testing.
