Orthoptic training program
Orthoptics is a discipline of ophthalmology specializing in disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movements. Orthoptists are uniquely skilled in diagnostic techniques that aid in the evaluation and treatment of convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, double vision and other disorders that disrupt binocular vision. Orthoptics is a challenging and rewarding field to any individual who enjoys working in the medical field and particularly those who enjoy working with children.
Orthoptists have employment opportunities and responsibilities in a variety of clinical settings such as private practices, hospitals and medical schools. They commonly work with pediatric and neuro-ophthalmologists. Because of the nature of strabismus and binocular vision disorders, they serve patients of all ages with an emphasis in pediatric ophthalmology. Orthoptists also see patients referred by local ophthalmologists in independent orthoptic clinics for sensorimotor evalutions.
About the program
Admission in the orthoptic program requires the completion of a baccalaureate degree (science preferred but not mandatory). Our orthoptists and ophthalmologists provide extensive didactic and clinical instruction to prepare students for certification. At this hospital, the orthoptic student will observe and examine many patients as well as rotate through Northwestern Ophthalmology Patient Services to see adult patients with strabismus. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in a research project that may be presented at a national or regional conference. Following successful completion of the two-year program, the student will be eligible to take the written, oral and practical certification examinations administered by the American Orthoptic Council.
Areas of study in the program include: ocular anatomy and physiology, neuro-anatomy, ophthalmic optics, ocular pharmacology, diagnostic and sensory testing, ocular motility evaluation and more.
Tuition for the program is $2,500 per year. The GRE is not required for admission.
