Pediatric Care of Premature Children by Raye-Ann deRegnier, MD, and Kerri Machut, MD (former fellow) Published Spring 2008

Rates of prematurity are rising in the United States, principally due to rising rates of late preterm delivery. In 2005, 12.7% of all births occurred prematurely, or prior to 37 weeks gestation, with 87% of premature births occurring between 32 and 37 weeks. Whereas extremely preterm infants are often discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with multiple follow-up appointments, larger preterm infants often receive follow-up solely from their pediatricians. The purpose of this article is to acquaint pediatricians with the most common needs of preterm infants after discharge and to review the most recent guidelines for preterm infant care. Areas to be discussed include nutrition, growth, immunization, and developmental care.

Ask the Experts – Neonatal Jaundice by Praveen Kumar, MD Published Spring 2006

When after discharge should infants be re-evaluated for neonatal jaundice?

Research: Brain Cooling Therapy for Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy by Vita Lerman Published Spring 2006

Cerebral hypothermia was the first treatment demonstrated in a major randomized trial to improve outcome of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term infants – a frequent cause of acute neurological injury, such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and cognitive abnormalities. Twenty-five centers throughout New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, and United States participated, including Children’s Memorial Hospital with J. Yasmin Khan, MD, as the institutional principal investigator.
