Promoting Dental Health in Pediatrics by Ray Jurado, DDS Published Fall 2004
Oral health is integral to the general health, growth, and overall development of a child. Dental caries, or tooth decay, the most common oral disease and the most prevalent infectious disease in American children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is 5 times more common than pediatric asthma. Although dental caries is preventable, it is found in more than 40% of children by the time they reach kindergarten. Since children are at risk for developing dental caries as soon as the first tooth erupts, pediatricians are in an excellent position to offer preventive strategies to new parents. This review will help pediatricians to assess the level of risk for tooth decay, recognize when dental referral is needed, and provide anticipatory guidance on dental health at various developmental stages.
