Mapping Complexity: Finding the Best Way to Eradicate a Cancer Cell by Vita Lerman Published Fall 2010
Seth Corey, MD, MPH, director of oncology research at the hospital uses computer model simulations to facilitate his study of leukemia cell proliferation, the complex interactions of the associated signaling pathways, and the effects of various chemotherapies. These computer models based on lab data are helping Corey's team identify better targets for dasatinib, a second-generation kinase inhibitor, and investigate how well this drug might inhibit acute myeloid leukemia cell growth when combined with other potentially useful agents.
Caring for Long-Term Survivors of Childhood Cancer by Kimberley J. Dilley, MD, MPH Published Fall/Winter 2009
Treatment for childhood cancer has advanced rapidly in the past few decades, with the current overall survival rate at almost 80%. The knowledge to adequately prevent, detect and treat the late effects due mainly to toxic chemotherapeutic and radiation exposure to the growing body is increasingly available in specialized follow-up clinics. However, these children are currently receiving the bulk of their medical care from community primary care providers. Pediatricians can care for the child survivor and help the adolescent and young adult survivor prepare for transition to adult healthcare with the assistance of a cancer center and freely available clinical practice guidelines.
