Healthy Living Initiative
The Division of Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation has organized the Healthy Living Initiative to coordinate activities and services that assist patients and their families in achieving their goals for health and wellness. The mission of the the program is to promote wellness and support healthy weight management in children with blood disorders and cancer.
In order to address our mission in fun and creative ways, some of the current projects within the division include the following:
- Hands-on demonstration of healthy child-oriented snack for patients and their familiies
- Creation of a Wellness Board in the clinic area that features a rotation of themes, including healthy school snacks, fitness, sleep hygiene, healthy beverages, yoga and stress reduction
- Creation of “Prescriptions for Healthy Living” for providers to facilitate discussion with families about living healthier more active lives
- Launch of a 4-week interactive pilot program for children with blood disorders and cancer to improve self-esteem and increase awareness of healthy eating
The Healthy Living Initiative has collaborated with invited guests from community-based organizations that are focused on wellness to explore new opportunities. These partners include organizations such as Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago's Children (CLOCC), Purple Asparagus, Chicago Park District and researchers from the University Of Illinois School Of Public Health.
If you have any suggestions or questions regarding the program and how you can incorporate health and wellness into your family, please contact a member of your Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation clinical team.
