Asthma Research: Preventing Asthma Attacks
Does your child have asthma?
This research study with the Division of Allergy and Immunology evaluates two treatments to learn whether they will prevent asthma attacks.
Children between 6 and 17 years old who have had one or more asthma attacks (or exacerbations) or who have been hospitalized overnight due to asthma problems in the past 12 months may be eligible.
Eligible participants will come to Children's Memorial Hospital's Allergy/Immunology Outpatient Center for study visits until June, 2012. After that, visits will take place at Lurie Children's. Allergy skin tests to common allergens will be performed along with breathing tests. Blood, urine, and nasal mucus samples along with home air and dust samples will be collected. The study lasts 12-15 months, and children who qualify after recruitment will have between one and sixteen study visits. All who qualify and participate will receive standard asthma care from asthma specialists in the Division of Allergy and Immunology. In addition, participants will receive study medications or placebo during the summer and fall. Participants and their parent or guardian must be willing to have physicians from the Division of Allergy and Asthma provide their asthma-related care during the study and, if recommended by the study physician, change their current medications.
Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
